Corbell slams ‘unacceptable’ workplace death toll

Simon Corbell.
THE young man who died on a Kingston Foreshore building site this morning was the fourth worker to die on a worksite in the ACT since December and the third to be killed on a construction site.

The Attorney General Simon Corbell this afternoon described the toll as “unacceptable”.

In joining the Chief Minister Katy Gallagher in expressing condolences to the dead man’s family, Corbell said: “The Government considers the number of fatalities in the civil and construction sector since December last year, to be unacceptable.

“Therefore today, I have asked the Justice and Community Safety Directorate to prepare options for government for the conduct of a broader investigation into workplace safety in the civil and construction sector in the ACT.

“The Government has already led a civil construction roundtable bringing together relevant ACT unions, the Master Builders Association and the Civil Contractors Federation which will put forward recommendations to government in the next month about ways to make civil construction workplaces safer.”

The Chief Minister, in a statement, said: “This is a terrible tragedy which has seen a worker lose his life on a worksite in the ACT, I would like to express my condolences and the condolences of the ACT community to the family of the young man involved with this accident.

“The Government is also thinking of those fellow workers who sustained injuries in the accident, and sends best wishes for their recovery.”
