Countdown to election begins

THE ACT election campaign formally begins today, as the government enters a caretaker period for the next five weeks before the October 20 election.

Although administration continues during the caretaker period, cabinet does not usually meet, and the government will avoid taking major policy decisions likely to commit an incoming government.

The period means the government will also refrain from entering into major contracts or other undertakings for the next 36 days.

However any new policy initiatives proposed to be implemented after the election could be announced.

The caretaker period comes after months of election promises from both parties, and a leaders’ debate between Chief Minister Katy Gallagher and Opposition Leader Zed Seselja this week.
