Data scandal: Libs call for Board of Inquiry

THE ACT Opposition will move a motion in the Assembly tomorrow to call for a Board of Inquiry into the manipulation of emergency department data at the Canberra Hospital.

The scandal, which started more than a week ago, surrounds a senior administrator at the Canberra Hospital who was stood down after it was revealed she had changed data in the emergency department for small improvements on waiting and treatment times.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher revealed she had worked with the administrator on a professional level and the administrator had a personal relationship with one of her family members.

Opposition spokesperson for health, Jeremy Hanson said they will also move to censure Katy Gallagher for misleading Canberrans about the state of the health system.

“At the heart of Katy Gallagher’s Department is a scandal involving falsified statistics and she is so deeply involved that it’s imperative for the whole situation to be investigated by an independent body,” Mr Hanson said.

“This would allow for a full review of any political interference which may have occurred and would have the ability to obtain relevant documents and call and protect witnesses.

“The Canberra Liberals will also move to censure Katy Gallagher for repeatedly misleading the community about the truth of how bad the ACT’s emergency department results are.

“Only a Board of Inquiry that will investigate the full extent of this scandal can remove the stench that now surrounds Katy Gallagher.”
