EVERYMAN Theatre should know better than try to compete with animals – an old theatre taboo – but in announcing the launch of “Everyman and His Dog” they have crossed the line, leaving their coming double bill of Woody Allen’s “God” and “pool (no water)” by Mark Ravenhill well and truly upstaged.
Their new initiative gives theatre patrons the option to pay for their theatre tickets with the donation of a one kilogram bag of dog food.
That’s not for every performance, but one show from each of Everyman Theatre’s seasons will be dedicated to the initiative, with dog food donations going to the RSPCA and ACT Rescue and Foster (ARF).
We hope our theatre critic, Joe Woodward who will review the show this weekend, will prove more interested in Allen’s philosophical wit and Ravenhill’s black comedy than in dogs, but we’ll see.
And as Everyman’s Louiza Blomfield says: “The people at Everyman Theatre are… completely mad about their animals.”
Duncan Driver directs “God,” where two ancient Greeks attempt to write the play they’re in and Duncan Ley stages “pool (no water),” which sees four artists spending a weekend with one of their group.
The cast includes the ubiquitous Ley, Jarrad West, Steph Roberts, Wayne Shepherd, Zack Drury, Amy Dunham and Zach Raffan
“Everyman and His Dog” will be unleashed at the double bill season running at The Courtyard Studio from July 19-28, bookings to 6275 2700. For information on how you can donate dog food for theatre tickets, go to www.facebook.com/everymantheatrecanberra
