Doorknocking starts for Vinnies Appeal

Zed Seselja officially launched the ACT Vinnies Doorknock Appeal.

THE Vinnies Doorknock Appeal was launched this morning with the Society hoping to raise $300,000 this year.

The funds raised from the door knock cover the provision of food, emergency accommodation, clothing, school fees, medical costs and other financial assistance that helps lessen the burden from those we assist.

In 2011, Vinnies members and volunteers experienced a strong demand to assist families and individuals in Canberra and Queanbeyan.

Chief Executive, Bob Wilson said: “In Canberra and Queanbeyan alone, our volunteers assisted nearly 25,000 families and individuals; providing over $526,000 on food for these people in need and over $288,000 on other costs to alleviate their burden including utility bills, mortgage or rent payments, and medical costs.

“The months following Christmas are still a busy period for Vinnies. Many of the calls we receive are financial requests as some people are still trying to recover from extra costs over the Christmas period.”

ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja, who officially launched the appeal, said: “My parents migrated from Croatia in the 1960s and raised six children on one very modest income. They were helped along the way by Vinnies through food donations and toys on at least one Christmas.

“I am very grateful for the assistance given to my family and have supported Vinnies ever since, through the annual Doorknock Appeal, CEO Sleepout, and Night Patrol.”
