Elton John for Canberra

It’s official. Elton John is coming to Canberra.

As part of a world tour that also takes in Perth and Sydney, Sir Elton will mark the 40 year anniversary of the  release of his hit  single, “RocketMan.”

He’ll be performing at the Canberra Stadium with a full band, a good excuse to perform most of his greatest hits on what promises to be a theatrical journey through his long career.

Though “Rocket Man” also received rave music reviews from the outset, it was the timing of its release, close to April 16, 1972, when Apollo 16 was launched in space, that  launched the song into a world-wide orbit.

Almost  immediately, the singer visited the  Manned Space Centre in Houston, Texas, where Al Worden, Apollo 15 command module pilot, took Elton and his musicians  Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone on a conducted tour of NASA headquarters.

European Space Agency astronaut André Kuipers has described the song as “an inspiration to many people who are interested in space, and especially those who wanted to become astronauts, including myself”.

As for Sir Elton’s Canberra leg, he’s all kindness, saying, “I have only played Canberra once before, in 2007, and that was a solo show. I am thrilled to be bringing my full band with me this time, and once again enjoying the wonderful hospitality of Australia’s capital city.”

Entrepreneur Michael Chugg is equally kind, saying this  anniversary tour will be “just a great excuse to bring one of the world’s greatest showmen to our country’s capital!”

Elton John “Rocket Man” anniversary tour, at Canberra Stadium, Wednesday November 14, tickets on sale from August 6, visit www.ticketek.com.au or 132 849.
