TENOR saxophonist player Matt Ottignon’s new band, “Ethio Groove” is performing in Canberra on Wednesday.
Though based in Sydney, he’ll be joined by Canberra musicians Luke Sweeting on the piano and Mark Sutton on the drums, with his brother Eden Ottignon on bass.
Ottignon presented his Ethio Groove band recently to a capacity audience in Sydney and says it has been inspired by “The Emusic Dozen: The Éthiopiques Series,” complete with its trance like rhythms, and five-tone scales, mixed with jazz, funk and Latin music.
Ottignon has been performing Ethio jazz with Ethiopian singer Dereb Desalegn for a number of years and has toured with him to Addis Ababa and Desalegn’s hometown Gonder.
Here’s a rare chance to hear how he adapts this “melismatic and acrobatic vocal style” to the sax.
