Everyday objects, extraordinary potential

Washing Machine (detail), 2012
“ART At Home” is Bettina Hill’s first solo sculpture exhibition, opening this week  at Canberra Contemporary Art Space’s  Furneaux Street Manuka gallery.

The playful exhibition is inspired by Hill’s home life and viewers van easily relate ot  her artworks built from furniture, kitchen items and food packaging, each incorporating the shapes of boxes and containers.

Food packets emerge from furniture and wooden boxes are built to contain icy-poles.

“I have created my sculptures from a sense that there is extraordinary potential in everyday experiences, everyday objects and everyday materials,” the artist says.

These sculptures pick up on Canberra’s urgent need for reuse, recycling and regeneration.

Hill collects second-hand items to give an artwork the feel that it was lifted straight from a Canberra house, though in fact her material is also sourced from  tip shops, op-shops and local nature-strips.

The show  continues Canberra Contemporary Art Space’s 2012 emerging artist showcase.

Hill was one of six new Canberran artists awarded a studio residency and exhibition by CCAS.

This ongoing program of residencies and exhibitions support local emerging contemporary artists.
