Family sanctuary at festival

CANBERRA CBD Ltd will introduce this year a “Sanctuary” precinct as part of the National Multicultural Festival.

The family-friendly precinct will include a children’s sanctuary, seniors’ sanctuary, breastfeeding tent, stroller parking, facilities for refilling and heating baby’s bottles and shaded areas for families.

Canberra CBD Ltd will also introduce a secure bicycle parking area at the intersection of Binara Street and City Walk.

Steve Gregory, CEO of Canberra CBD Ltd, says the introduction of the bicycle enclosure will enable families to ride into the festival and avoid having to find a car park.

He said the Sanctuary is the perfect area for families, mums with babies and seniors to find some repose during the dynamic event.

“The National Multicultural Festival is one of the most lively and most popular events held in the city centre,” he said.

“At times, these large public events can often be overwhelming for seniors, children and parents – it’s good to have a quiet shady space to retreat to.

“Sour Cherry café, located in the Sanctuary precinct, is also supporting the initiative by modifying its menu over the duration of the Festival to appeal to mums, children and seniors.”

The Children’s Sanctuary will host a range of activities including a piñata, arts ‘n’ crafts, Kenny Koala, storytelling in different languages plus show bags.

Activities for adults include massages, makeovers and tips on creating a vibrant wardrobe. Activities start from 10am and end at 4pm with a children’s parade.

Mr Gregory said based on the success of this inaugural year of the Sanctuary precinct, future years could see the space evolve even further.

Canberra CBD Limited is a B.I.D. (Business Improvement District) for the Canberra City Centre. For more information visit www.inthecitycanberra.com.au or http://www.multiculturalfestival.com.au/
