Fess up: what do you like about Canberra?

The ‘Like Canberra’ logo.
AS the ACT election draws to a close, locals are being urged to cast another vote – to nominate their favourite thing about living in Canberra.

The search has begun for the top 100 reasons why people like living in Canberra, as part of the Canberra Centenary community engagement campaign, “Like Canberra”.

Executive director of the Centenary of Canberra, Jeremy Lasek, says the campaign aims to instil and build local pride ahead of next year’s Centenary.

“Our aim is to get Canberrans talking about what a great city they share and to help us put together a big list of the things we enjoy most about living here,” he says.

“It could be the spectacular Canberra colours in autumn, a walk around the lake, a picnic at the Cotter or grabbing a coffee at Manuka – the options are almost endless.

“It will be impossible to build significant pride in Canberra throughout the rest of the nation, until we feel that sense of pride ourselves first.”
The campaign will use the Facebook “like” symbol in its advertisements, which will be plastered across ACTION buses, newspapers, flags and websites.

“This is purely local, and it’s a significant campaign – a big conversation,” Lasek says.

“I’d be surprised if we’ve ever tried to engage as many Canberrans in a campaign, as this one will.”

Nominations will be accepted online, via Facebook or on Twitter via the hashtag #likecanberra until the end of the year.

The nominations will then be grouped and distributed for a big, city-wide vote in January with the aim to find the 100 most special things about life in Canberra.

The top 100 will be announced in March, Canberra’s 100th birthday month.

To nominate what you like most about life in Canberra vote on www.canberra100/likecanberra, on Facebook, or Twitter #likecanberra.

I love driving over Commonwealth Bridge and taking in the wonderful views – man made and God made – of this amazing city. I am so glad I came to Canberra 42 years ago and so proud that I am known to frequently spruik this lovely city.

The incredible music scene. The illustrious David Pereira; regarded as one of, if not THE finest cellist in Australia. Associate Professor Geoffrey Lancaster AM is considered one of the world’s most respected pianists and in 2006, he was the ACT’s Australian of the year. Max McBride, a phenomenal double bassist who was invited to perform with the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, also having taught ANU graduate Matthew McDonald who is the current Principle double bassist for the Berlin Philharmonic. Alice Giles, considered one of Australia’s best harpists; having been invited to play with the Australian World Orchestra in 2011. Oh wait! No, they’ve all been fired… Good work ANU S
^ With the VAST amount of replies to “what do you like about Canberra” it is clear that Canberra is now officially the worst city in Australia. Leave this place, save yourselves, run, run as fast as you can. Don’t even go near the “Canberra is a beautiful place, it’s beautiful on the inside!” No, it’s not. It’s the same as saying your fat aunty Salma is beautiful on the inside; no, she’s not, she’s just fat!

After being away & coming home along the Barton Highway & seeing Balck Mountain Tower always makes me happy that I’m home. God’s own country & our little secret! Perfect.

The Great Central Being to this City, my home and birth place of 53 years, Lake Burley Griffin. Sail. swim. watch sunsets, stroll, paddle-boat and always- enjoy. Bring on the fountain, the fireworks, the Queen and the many festivities and against a beautiful Brindabella pink or orange sunset the lady of the lake in Canberra REIGNS supreme!
