Film festival toasts diversity

THE “rich diversity” of film will be celebrated when the ANU Film Group holds its Diversity Week Film Festival from August 6 to 11.

The free event is open to anyone and will feature eight “unique” foreign films screened in the group’s 370-seat cinema in the Coombs Theatre at the university.

President of the film group Adrian Ma said the films are as “diverse as it gets.”

“[There’s] an Indian-set adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s quintessentially British novel “Tess of the d’Urbervilles” to a French-language Finnish film from a Japanese director about a young African refugee,” he said.

“Other highlights include a Luc Besson-directed biopic of Burmese democratic
advocate Aung San Suu Kyi, and a double feature of recent Hong Kong cinema from acclaimed directors Johnnie To and Derek Yee.”

The ANU Film Group is Australia’s largest film society and has been operating since 1966. The group screens almost 200 films a year, from the latest Hollywood blockbusters, to foreign and arthouse films and classics.
