Former head of School of Music dies in Denmark

John Winther.
CANBERRA’S music community will be saddened to hear of the death in Denmark of pianist and former director of the Canberra School of Music, John Winther.

Winther was born on August 20, 1933 in Copenhagen, and educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. He made his debut as a pianist in 1954.

He was director of opera at the Royal Theatre from 1965 to 1971, when he was appointed artistic director of the Australian Opera in Sydney. In 1977, he became  director and professor at the Conservatorium of Music, University of Newcastle, Australia and later director of  the School of Music in Canberra from 1980 until 1985, when he became a professor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

On his retirement Winther returned to live in Lohals, Denmark, and had been in poor health for some years.

He is survived by his children Thomas Winther (director of Aarhus Conservatorium), Nicholas (Koppel) Winther, Jens Winther, Lara Winther, Sine Winther and his Canberra born son Kristian Winther, now a brilliant concert violinist.
