THE iconic, 55 year old Starlight drive in movie sign in Watson is on its way to being repaired, after “CityNews” reported on its collapse yesterday.
A spokesperson for Territory and Municipal Services says the sign was moved last night to be stored in a depot until repair, under instruction from Chief Minister Katy Gallagher.
Gallagher says she called TAMS after seeing a photo of the fallen sign on the cover of this week’s “CityNews.”
“The sign is part of our history,” she says.
“It will be restored as history requires it to remain in that spot, so we will have to work out a way to better secure it and keep it safe.”
Last week “CityNews” discovered the three-metre-high, double-sided sign had fallen on to a nearby fence, and looked to be damaged beyond repair with one panel missing and a large hole in the second panel.
It was unclear when the sign had fallen, but it appeared to be the result of heavily rusted screws holding it in place.
The sign, which was erected in 1957 and used to mark the entry to the Starlight drive-in movie theatre from the Federal Highway, had been heritage listed in February.
TAMS says the sign was moved on behalf of the ACT Heritage Council.
