TWO weeks ago I attended a lunchtime concert at Wesley Music Centre featuring star classical guitarist Bradley Kunda — it was packed out.
Now Kunda returns to the centre with soprano, Rebecca MacCallion and fellow guitarist Matt Withers, in “Wednesday Lunchtime Live”.
MacCallion and Kunda will perform the Schubert “Schwanengesang – Ständchen”, “Gretchen am spinnrade”, and three British folksongs from the Isles, “Mountains O’Mourne”, “Down by the Salley Gardens” and “The Last Rose of Summer” (arr. by Kunda).
Withers, who is Kunda’s partner in the “Brew” Guitar Duo, will join to perform Joaquin Rodrigo Cuatro Madrigales Amatorios (arr. by Kunda) for voice and two guitars.
In 2008 MacCallion moved to Canberra to study music at the ANU. Her first opera appearance in Gillian Sullivan’s “Marriage of Figaro” and she was recently a soloist with Melbourne Opera’s touring production of “Tosca”. In 2011, she was a CAT nominee for her portrayal of Velma Kelly in “Chicago”. She is a recipient of The Australia-Britain Society Award for Voice and traveled to the UK this year to pursue her singing.
Kunda is completing a PhD at the ANU and won the 2011 Canberra Classical Guitar Society Composition Competition, to compose a new work for guitar orchestra. In addition to writing guitar music, his music for carillon will soon be published. Kunda will soon complete specialist studies in early-19th century guitar performance practice at the Accademia l’Ottocento (Italy) under Carlo Barone.
Wesley Music Centre “Wednesday Lunchtime Live series”, March 14, from 12.40pm to 1.20pm. $2 or paper note entry. No bookings required. From 3-4pm on April 1, Kunda, MacCallion and Withers will perform solos, duos and trios as part of ABC Classic FM’s “Sunday Live” program, at Llewellyn Hall. Free entry. Be seated by 2:45pm
