High noon at the Music Festival

THE Canberra International Music Festival kicked off in high style at high noon today at the National Portrait Gallery, with a performance dedicated to Patrick White.

The concert was  part of the “Amazing Spaces” series in the festival, presented in association with the Australian Institute of Architects, “exploring the harmonies between music and architecture”,  and was preceded by a talk about the building from Graham Dix of JPW Architects, who designed the Portrait Gallery.

There followed a walk around the spaces while individual musicians played flute, mandolin, percussion and harp and soprano Susan Ellis vocalised.

A more formal concert followed, with baroque  flute player Kate Clark  and percussionist Michael Askill joining Canberra’s Griffyn Ensemble and at one point circling the audience.
