Homage and originality for fond farewell to jazz

ROHAN Moore is a drummer and composer currently leading a band playing original material, covers and arrangements.

Armenian jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan—homage.
There’s a mournful note to Moore’s note to “CityNews” about the event, as he invites us all to enjoy “tonnes of exciting new material”  while simultaneously pointing out that it will be “ the last term the ANU Jazz department will ever see.” That’s no doubt why he’s made the evening free for students.

“The Songbird Project,” Moore tells “CityNews”, is a vehicle for original compositions inspired by life experiences in love, adventure, and, germane to contemporary events on the music scene, “fury, and corruption.”

The combo of Miles O’Connell on tenor and soprano sax, Tate Sheridan on  piano, Maximillian Alduca on upright and electric bass and Moore himself on drums and other percussion, says they’re drawing from contemporary music of the United States, South America, and the Middle-East.

They’ll  also be playing “heavily personalised standards,” and will pay homage to the works of Israeli-born jazz artist Avishai Cohen and Armenian jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan.

“The Songbird Project,” in the Big Band Room in Peter Karmel building, ANU School of Music,  7.15pm, Wednesday, September 26,  Students free, general admission $15. Bar provided.
