Indian dance-drama spectacle for Canberra

A SPECTACULAR Indian musical/ballet with voiceover in English is coming to Canberra tomorrow.

The play, “Krishna,” sees classical, folk and film dance in combination.

Danced and acted by a troupe of 15 to 18 performers, with sound design by Oscar award-winner Resul Pookutty, the production crafted by choreographer and leading actor Shobhana  as a meld of  classical and Bollywood dancing,  the musical showcases Krishna the man, his philosophy and why he is still revered throughout India.

Shobana is the founder-director of  Kalarpana, a school for classical Bharatanatyam dance in Chennai, India.

As well as training  200 students in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam and Nattuvangam dance styles, the  aim of Kalarpana is to organize annual festivals throughout India, in part to help raise funds to be ploughed back into training talented artistes who are financially insecure.

Kalarpana has made a name for its off beat presentations.

“Krishna,” At Erindale Theatre, 7pm,  Wednesday, October 31, tickets at the door.
