Inspectors target building sites

INSPECTORS, from the Office of the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner, will be visiting building sites around Canberra tomorrow to assess compliance with Federal workplace laws, including correct wages and entitlements.

The ABCC has recovered more than $43,000 for 24 underpaid building workers in the ACT since it began operation as a full-service regulator in October 2010.

“Inspectors will provide guidance on workplace laws, freedom of association and dispute resolution procedures, to help building employers get it right,” ABC commissioner Leigh Johns said.

“The ABCC has a role to ensure employees are being paid the correct wages and entitlements.

“I am determined to ensure that all building and construction workers in Canberra receive a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.

“If employees think they are not receiving the entitlements they deserve, they should speak with an inspector. Private meetings can be arranged.

“Unintentional underpayments might occur from time to time, and providing advice and education is the best way to prevent this harm before it occurs.”
