Japanese arrive for sister city celebration

NINE delegates from Queanbeyan’s Sister City of Minami Alps, Japan, are in town to celebrate the 20th year of the relationship.

The two groups from Japan, an official delegation of five from Minami Alps Council and a delegation of four adults from the city, arrived yesterday.

The official delegation includes the mayor of Minami Alps Hirohumi Nakagomi and representatives of its Sister City Committee, while the adult delegation includes adults from the city interested in learning more about Queanbeyan and the Australian culture.

Queanbeyan mayor Tim Overall said: “A number of official events will be held before the official delegation departs on Wednesday including the planting of a tree at Queanbeyan’s Sister City Park, an official dinner on Tuesday night and a visit to Parliament House. The adult delegation will remain in Queanbeyan until Friday and will enjoy sightseeing opportunities around Queanbeyan and Canberra.

“At an official dinner on Tuesday night, Council will present the Minami Alps delegates with a botanical drawing to honour the 20th anniversary of our relationship. Then, I will join Mayor Nakagomi in signing two commemorative certificates to acknowledge the occasion.”

Mayor Nakagomi said he was  looking forward to visiting some of the region’s top tourist sights.
