ONE is struck by the visual intrigue created by the intricate set and lighting design of this gracious work. As Raoul Craemer’s Kabir emerges from a kind of web or peacock’s wing, we become aware of an immense mythic quality within the story of this Indian poet and mystic.

The evening is divided into two plays: “Kabir” played by Craemer and “Maria Chekhova” played by Naone Carrel.

The playwright has imbued his characters with intense human qualities expressing humour, vulnerability and vanity. As the narrative progresses, we become aware of their reflections and growth beyond the entrapment of their own historical mythology. The effect is mesmerising.

There is something particularly joyful in being a part of the dialogue with these characters. Both reach out to us for clarification and even consideration of their doubts and personal intrigues. Mortality gives us hope rather than despair.

Craemer plays the role as if it was written specifically for him. He must be given the opportunity to reprise and develop it. Carrel used her own injury to enhance her subtle portrayal of the ailing Chekhova. This production reinforces the best qualities of live performance.
