Labor pledge $70m for school upgrades

ACT Labor have pledged $70 million to go towards upgrades of public schools if re-elected.

The party announced its entire education platform today, with Chief Minister Katy Gallagher setting out the party’s vision for ”teachers and students in need”.

Key commitments include $45 million to build a new Primary School at Coombs in the Molonglo Valley, $4 million for professional development for teachers and $1.7 million for a student-focused Mt Stromlo Science Centre and Planetarium, to provide opportunities for students to connect to maths and science.

The party also bid to provide $10 million over four years to support students with learning disabilities, in both mainstream and special school environments and more in-class support for teachers and students by committing up to $12 million to maintain and expand the School Literacy and Numeracy Field Officer program.

The party also offered additional $6000 scholarships for workers wishing to do their degree in early-childhood education.

Ms Gallagher says the funding will “create the best learning environments for students and teachers in our older schools.”
