Labor promises light rail for Canberra

ACT Labor has promised to build a light rail line between Civic and Gungahlin if re-elected in October.

The party says the light rail, dubbed ‘Capital Metro’, would be the backbone of Canberra’s public transport network, combined with the frequent network of buses.

A cost estimate this morning put a $614 million price tag on the project, with construction expected to begin by 2016, and stage one of the project due for completion by 2018.

The line would use vehicles capable of carrying up to 200 passengers, at 8-10 minute frequencies along a 12km route from Hibberson Street in Gungahlin to the City Centre.

Options for investigation of second and subsequent stages are already being considered, including Kingston to the City via Barton, Woden to the City, Woden to Erindale and Tuggeranong, as well as to Belconnen, Weston Creek and Molonglo.

The announcement means both ACT Labor and the Greens will go to next month’s election with a light rail as a central policy position.

Australian Motorist Party Leader Chic Henry today voiced his concern over the proposal, warning the light rail could be a “cost blow out.”

Labor has allocated $30 million allocated for initial planning and design of the light rail.
