No-confidence motion is ‘politics 101’: Gallagher

CHIEF Minister Katy Gallagher has called the ACT Opposition’s plan to move a no-confidence motion against her “totally expected”, and says she does not believe the Greens will support the motion.

“The Liberal Party could have done this seven days ago…and we could have moved on with the business of the [Legislative] Assembly for the final two sitting weeks,” she said today.

“They’ve waited until the Olympics have finished, this is all orchestrated politics 101, we can see what it is for.”

The Opposition will give formal notice of the motion tomorrow after Ms Gallagher makes a formal apology to ACT victims of past forced adoption practices, which could result in a week’s shutdown of the Legislative Assembly before the chamber reconvenes to debate the motion.

Opposition Leader Zed Seselja said the move was due to Ms Gallagher’s “shocking failings” in the health portfolio, after the heavily criticised data doctoring scandal at the Canberra Hospital. Mr Seselja has argued he couldn’t have given earlier notice of the motion as it “had to be done on an Assembly sitting day.”

Ms Gallagher said the Government and the Greens are seeking advice on whether the chamber can continue to sit and “continue with other business” until the no-confidence motion is debated next Tuesday.

“We’re taking advice on whether there is any procedural way of bringing the debate on…we’ve got the apology tomorrow we’d like to get through,” she said.

“We need to look at if we do have to suspend for seven days, what we can do for extra business…as far as I know [The Greens] will not be supporting the no-confidence motion.”

She dismissed the Liberals’ claims of her “failures” in the health portfolio and their criticism of the data doctoring scandal.

“The Auditor General has cleared me of any wrongdoing in [the data doctoring] matter…this is politics pure and simple,” she said.

“If anyone goes back and has a look at the significant changes we have made to the health system over the last four to ten years really, go and have a look at the new services, the new wards, the new mental health unit, the cancer centre, the community health centres, the new walk in centres…go ahead and say that’s a failure but I don’t think people will actually believe that.

“We’re not perfect but we’ve done a lot of hard work in this area and I think a lot of that credit goes to the staff at the health directorate who are and continue to be used as political footballs by the Liberal Party which is simply disgraceful.”
