Lowest crime drop in decades

CANBERRA has had a big drop in motor vehicle thefts and burglaries – but locals remain fearful of their safety, according to a recent snapshot of criminal behaviour in the territory.

Government Services data showed a 26 per cent drop in burglaries and an 11 per cent drop in motor vehicle theft, and motor vehicle theft and burglary were at their lowest levels in a decade.

But the data also showed Canberrans are more fearful of break-ins and car thefts than the average Australian, with nearly 60 per cent of Canberrans either somewhat or very concerned about having their house broken into, while roughly 45 per cent fear having their car stolen.

Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development Simon Corbell says the government is working towards ensuring Canberrans feel protected against crime.

“Property crime is an area of criminality that can damage the perceptions of safety in our community and for this reason the ACT Labor Government has made this downward trend a continuing priority,” he says.
