Mt Ainslie safe from ammo

MOUNT Ainslie Nature Reserve reopens tomorrow.

The reserve, between Mount Ainslie Drive and Campbell Park Offices off Northcott Drive, has been closed since November 17 while the Department of Defence searched for unexploded ordnance – military ammunition which has been fired but failed to explode.

“The survey work has now been completed. It found nine pieces of unexploded ordnance which were safely detonated by the Department of Defence,” said Stephen Hughes, manager of National Parks, Reserves and Rural Land.

“Territory and Municipal Services is satisfied, based upon expert advice, it is safe for the reserve to re-open.”

TAMS will erect warning signage at relevant access points to the reserve which outline that unexploded ordnance may be found in the area.

Defence advises that in the event that an item is found that may be ordnance-related, the item should not be touched, tampered with or disturbed in any way.

Anyone who finds ordnance is urged to contact ACT Policing and provide its location by calling 131 444. Police will arrange for trained Defence specialists to attend who will either remove the item or render it safe.
