CANBERRA’S musical heavyweights are throwing a free concert for the ACT community tonight to show the ANU what they can do.
Organiser of the concert, pianist and masters student at the university, Andrew Rumsey, told “CityNews” it was to be “a celebration of the School of Music and, in a way a stand against proposed changes”.
Mr Rumsey said that music students had kept up the momentum of protests during the present period of consultation over a proposed altered curriculum for the school, which finishes on Friday.
The concert will feature students playing in a 10-piece harp orchestra, a flute ensemble and the School of Music Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir.
And the heavyweights? Many of them will soon be out of a job if the ANU has its way. It’s a list that elite professional orchestras around the world would kill for, headed up by Canberra’s most famous composer, Larry Sitsky, performing at the keyboard.
Other performers will include fortepianist Geoffrey Lancaster, cellist David Pereira, flautist Virginia Taylor, classical guitarist Timothy Kain, jazz guitarist Mike Price and sax-player John Mackey.
Mr Rumsey said the finale would be a “really powerful, reflective piece” performed by a string quartet and the choir.
“Hopefully, we can make a difference,” he said.
