Noses down as wine judging begins

JUDGING has begun at  Exhibition Park as some of the world’s  leading wine minds come together to rate more than 1300 entries in the National Wine Show of Australia.

So sensitive is the process that perfume, aftershave, hand cream or deodorant must not be worn by anyone attending the judging for fear of having a distracting impact on the judges’ assessment of the wines.

A panel of 13 judges, led by new chair of judges, winemaker Stephen Pannell, assisted by eight associates will undertake the four-day tasting , until Thursday, to find the medal and trophy winners . The panel includes international judges Ned Goodwin, a leading wine consultant based in Tokyo, and David Jean, wine buyer for Swedish liquor retailer Systembolaget.

The show accepts only wines in the premium classes that have previously been awarded a medal at a capital city wine show or approved regional show.

Trophy and medal results will be announced at a gala dinner at The Great Hall, Parliament House on Thursday.
