Park still closed as ammo hunt continues

A SECTION of Mount Ainslie nature reserve will remain closed until February 10, as a survey of the area continues for unexploded military ammunition.

The section, between Mount Ainslie Drive and Campbell Park Offices off Northcott Drive, has been closed since November 17 while a detailed survey of the area was undertaken for unexploded ordnance.

The survey, undertaken by a contractor engaged by the National Unexploded Ordnance Office, began following the revelation the area was used as a Defence training ground and firing range in the 1940s and 1950s.

The contractor has uncovered the waste remnant of six mortars, however no further unexploded ordnance was found.

“Defence, however, recommended that a small area of the park be further surveyed for items which may be buried,” National Parks, Reserves and Rural Land acting manager Peter Galvin said.

“While we have been advised that there is no danger to the public, we have engaged an experienced contractor to undertake this survey just to be sure there is no unexploded ordnance in the area.

“The extended closure will allow the survey to take place without disruption.

“Clear warning signage is being erected at relevant access points to the reserve, as well as along fencing, advising about the extension of the closure.

“I would like to thank the public for their continued patience while the survey process is undertaken.”
