Police get trapped in violent confrontation

THREE young men have been arrested after a violent confrontation in Belconnen last night where they threatened police with scissors and attempted to trap an officer in a stairwell.

Police were forced to draw a firearm and taser during the confrontation, which began when police arrived at the scene at a Belconnen residence after a report of a disturbance involving up to 10 people.

Police entered the Belconnen unit and saw three aggressive men aged in their twenties, who appeared to be the instigators of the disturbance.

Shortly after two officers entered the unit, two of the three men rushed past police and attempted to seal off the exit to the unit.

Police called for urgent assistance and attempted to negotiate with the offenders without success.

Two of the three men grabbed an officer, forced him into the stairwell and tried to close the door. The officer then had to forcibly regain entry and use capsicum spray to re-enter the unit.

While other officers arrived in support, the officer inside the unit was threatened by a man with a pair of scissors. A taser and a firearm were drawn by the officers, and the offender complied.

The three men, aged 21, 23 and 25-years-old, were arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House where they were all charged with common assault and obstruct territory public official.  The 25-year-old was also charged with possess offensive weapon. The men will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court today.
