Police outraged at ‘stupidity’ of drink drivers

POLICE have expressed outrage over two drivers who were caught drink driving within an hour of eachother in the same car and street last night.

Around 8.40pm, police stopped a blue Mazda 6 sedan while random breath testing on Caswell Drive, Aranda.

The driver, a 22-year-old Kambah man, returned a Blood Alcohol Concentration reading of 0.079.

An hour later, police stopped the same car – again on Caswell Drive, Aranda.

The driver, a 21-year-old man from Narrabundah, returned a positive roadside screening test, and was taken to Belconnen Police Station where he returned a positive BAC reading of 0.063.

As the holder of an international driver’s licence he was subject to a zero alcohol content limit and was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice.

He was taken to the ACT Watch House, where he was charged with drink-driving.

Officer-in-Charge of Traffic Operations Sergeant Rod Anderson said the message does not seem to be getting through to some Canberra motorists and it is clear these drivers have a complete disregard for other road users.

“It’s appalling that these two drink drivers have shown such disregard for the law and are clearly willing to put not only their own lives at risk but also those of their passenger and other road users,” he said.

“If you breach the road rules and place your own life or the lives of others in danger, we will catch you.”

Police are targeting alcohol and drug impaired driving over the next three months as part of its multi-agency road safety strategy.

Both men will face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date for drink-driving.
