Police pleased with long weekend operation

OUT of 1533 random breath tests over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, only 12 drivers were caught for drink driving.

The RBTs were part of Operation Stay Alert, a joint operation between ACT and NSW Police, targeted speeding, drink driving and driver fatigue.

At one incident, about 7am on Friday, police were conducting an RBT on Streeton Drive in Rivett when they noticed a white Holden Commodore driving on the opposite side of the road. The Stirling woman returned an alcohol content reading of 0.114 and immediately lost her licence. She had her two children in the car with her.

For speeding, 181 tickets were handed out to drivers with 53 drivers cautioned. Of the drivers booked was a 22-year-old Narrabundah woman who was caught speeding at 130km/h in a 70km zone on Mugga Lane, Symonston.

Four out of 20 drivers, tested for drugs were caught with a prescribed drug in their system.

Acting Supt Rod Anderson said police were generally pleased with driver behaviour.

“There were no fatalities in the ACT during the long weekend. In fact we only recorded four collisions in the four day period and of those none of the occupants suffered major injuries,” Acting Supt Anderson said.

“This means Canberrans are getting the message, it’s about saving lives.”
