LONG-standing director Ron Radford has secured another two years at the helm of the National Gallery of Australia.

Announced by Arts Minister Simon Crean today, Tim Fairfax was also appointed interim chair of the Council until December 31.

Mr Crean said there was a “strong wish” to reappoint Dr Radford from the board and the previous chair Rupert Myer.

“Dr Radford will continue to bring exceptional curatorial leadership to the exhibition program and the collection to build on his success in raising the profile of this premier cultural institution,” Mr Crean said.

Mr Crean said that in his first two terms, Dr Radford has overseen the recent extension of the Gallery, an expansion of the collection, an increase in visitor numbers as well as the extraordinarily successful “Masterpieces from Paris” exhibition.

“He has also developed an exciting program of exhibitions and initiatives for the future including a landmark partnership with the Royal Academy of Arts to stage the most significant survey exhibition of Australian art to be held overseas in 2013,”  he said.

“Dr Radford’s reappointment means he will be able to oversee the delivery of this exciting program.”

Interim chair, Mr Fairfax, is chairman of the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, Salvation Army Brisbane Advisory Board, a member of the Philanthropy Australia Council and patron of a wide range of other organisations.

“My decision regarding longer term options for the Gallery Chair’s position is yet to be finalised. This interim arrangement will provide continuity of governance and follows my discussions with the former Chair and within the Council,” Mr Crean said.
