Cinesound Special: Melbourne Cup 1948; glass slide advertisement
(NFSA title: 434286)
THE National Film and Sound Archive of Australia is marking  Melbourne Cup Day with a selection of historical moving image, sound and photographs dating as far back as 1896.

These are available online for Australians to enjoy at this special time of the year.

There are 10 Melbourne Cup titles on the  NFSA’s Australian screen website at aso.gov.au/titles/tags/Melbourne%20Cup

Highlights include: “Melbourne Cup”, 1896, a  six-minute film documenting the 1896 Melbourne Cup and  one of Australia’s oldest surviving films; “Australasian Gazette – 1924 Melbourne Cup”, a  newsreel features highlights of the 1924 Melbourne Cup, including the horses entering the racetrack, crowds in the grandstand and the race, and, non-visual,   “Ken Howard Calls the Melbourne Cup,”  1941 sound recording of sports broadcaster Ken Howard calling the Cup.

And that’s just the beginning.
