Salvos suffer Doorknock slump

CANBERRANS have donated less money to The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Doorknock Appeal compared to last year with the total figure down 18 per cent. So far the tally sits at $195,138.

Captain Dale Murray, Appeal Director for The Salvation Army said: “Whilst early indications are that our doorknock appeal result will be down on last year, there are some areas of Canberra where results are not finalised with more donations to be received and banked during the week.”

In Southern NSW $173,182 was donated, 14 per cent less than 2011, and nationally, $6.6 million was donated, about 6.2 per cent less than 2011.

“We know many Australians are doing it tough and household budgets have been impacted by increasing costs of living,” Captain Murray said.

“The alarming data released by The Salvation Army last week indicated that of 1,700 of our clients who were surveyed, 94 per cent had no savings in reserve, 52 per cent had gone without meals and 29 per cent indicated they couldn’t afford a decent meal at least once a week.

“It is to meet these and many other needs faced by everyday Australians that The Salvation Army still urgently needs your support to make this year’s Red Shield Appeal a success.

“On behalf of The Salvation Army, I want to thank all Canberrans who donated to this years Red Shield Doorknock Appeal. I also want to thank the 1135 volunteers from across Canberra who assisted us on the weekend raising these vital funds.”

Donations can still be made by visiting www.salvos.org.au, calling 13 SALVOS (13 72 58); or in person at any Westpac branch.
