Set Sail floats into Canberra

SYDNEY-based folk/indie-pop trio Set Sail will be at the Transit Bar on Thursday as part of an 18-date tour of the country, showing off their new six-track “Hey!” in which the lead track “Charlestown”, is about Californian summers and roaring ’20s dancing.

“Hey!” is the band’s first new material since 2011’s “The Riley Moore” EP which sold more than 14,000 copies.

Formed in November, 2010, by a bunch of university dropouts, Set Sail set off on their “World Stage” tour, performing in 40 cities across four continents.

They’ve been arrested in Madrid for busking, played in their under-jocks in London and performed 30,000 feet above sea level on a Virgin Atlantic flight.

Earlier in the year, lead singer Brandon Hoogenboom was deported by Australian authorities for breaching his visa conditions. A Facebook petition attracting more than 8500 signatures of support within a day of its creation helped bring Hoogenboom back to Australia.

“We’re excited to bring the new material live,” says Josiah Willows. “It’s been an incredible journey this past year and we’re very keen to get out of the studio and back on the road!”

“A real, joyous energy” is how Triple J has described their music.
