Speed cushions to stay: Rattenbury

SPEED cushions on Flinders Way near Manuka have improved road safety, according to Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury, but changes will be made to their size and spacing.

Rattenbury announced the results of the evaluation of the speed cushions today, which were installed in May last year to reduce vehicle speeds between Murray Crescent and Mugga Way.

“Following the installation of the speed cushions, average speeds in sections of Flinders Way
have decreased between 10 and 18 kilometres per hour,” says Rattenbury.

“Traffic volumes have also decreased between 8 per cent and 32 per cent, without pushing the traffic volumes on identified alternative routes beyond their acceptable road limit.”

Rattenbury says short term data shows a decrease in the number of crashes when
comparing the 10 month periods before and after the installation of the speed cushions.

But Rattenbury says the government will make modifications to the cushions after community feedback, including changes to the size and spacing of the speed cushions.

“The distance between the cushions and parked vehicles will also be modified to improve bicycle safety,” Rattenbury says.

These improvements will be implemented in December and are expected to cost approximately $50,000.
