Stats show thefts down, sex assaults up

PROPERTY and violent crime rates have dropped in the ACT, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

According to the ABS Recorded Crime – Victims Australia report for 2011, car theft has decreased by 42.5 per cent across the ACT, burglary down 36.1 per cent, robbery down 17.2 per cent, theft down 16.6 per cent and assault 5.2 per cent.

It is also the first time the ACT is below the national average in car theft.

However the report did record a rise in sexual assaults reported in the ACT – 35 more sexual assaults in 2011 that in 2010.

According to Attorney General Simon Corbell, the Government has placed a high priority on reducing property crime, with the creation of a dedicated Property Crime Targeting Team within ACT Policing, as well as the Property Crime Reduction Strategy, which outlines reduction targets in burglary crime and motor vehicle theft for coming years.

“It is very pleasing to see that independent statistics, produced and collated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirm that the government and ACT Policing’s approach to property crime is working,” he said.

The Property Crime Team is responsible for targeting known recidivist offenders, enforcing bail conditions and aggressive targeting using intelligence collection and analysis.
