The fine art of flamenco singing

Eva Piñero-Mesa
CANBERRANS will have a unique opportunity to try the traditional Spanish art of flamenco singing when cantaora (singer) Eva Piñero-Mesa visits the ACT this weekend for a one-off workshop with her friend and colleague Tomás Dietz at the Canberra Flamenco Centre.

Piñero-Mesa will be teaching the special workshop at the Belconnen Arts Centre  on Sunday, May 20 from 1pm to 2.30pm and everyone is invited.

Dietz says the workshop is open to everybody, “you don’t need to know anything about flamenco or even be a professional singer or even understand Spanish to join in”.

“This is about discovering the passion of flamenco and how flamenco has emerged from its origins within Spanish gypsy culture to something that is now enjoyed by people of all ages, nations and backgrounds,” she says.

Piñero-Mesa grew up in Malaga, southern Spain and, after winning a prize in a local TV program at 17, began performing in local bars, hotel clubs, radio and television, later moving to London where she worked and trained with flamenco dancers and performed at Glastonbury Festival and the London premiere of the Pedro Almodovar film, “Volver”.

Introduction to Flamenco Singing by Eva Piñero-Mesa, Sunday, May 20, 1pm-2.30pm, Belconnen Arts Centre, Emu Bank, Belconnen.

The cost is  $50 (no concessions, but participants of the singing workshop will be able to join in a free flamenco dance class after the workshop).
