ANCA studio artist Carmel McCrow loves exploring Wassily Kandinsky’s notion that “every phenomenon can be experienced in two ways”.
These two ways are not random, but bound up with the phenomenon – they are derived from the nature of the phenomena, from two characteristics of the same, external and internal.
Now in a new exhibition at ANCA, McCrow has created a series of oil paintings that explore, on one side, what the eye actually sees (a literal external reading), and on the other side, the artist’s internal or emotional response to the same imagery.
The works critique various approaches to depicting a subject on canvas.
An example of this is the diptych “Pretty maids all in a row” and “All in a row”, which on one canvas depicts a somewhat kitch realistically painted floral display bed at Floriade (“Pretty maids all in a row”), and on the other a glorious geometric abstraction of colour a pattern (“All in a row”).
Another exhibition on this theme was held by the artist in Melbourne during February.
Official opening and drinks with the artist from 3-5pm Saturday April 28, exhibition continues at ANCA Gallery, 1 Rosevear Street, Dickson, 12-5pm, Wednesday-Sunday until May 6.
