US artist made resident at the Glassworks

A work by Matthew Szösz
IN a coup for the Canberra Glassworks, the US Embassy is sponsoring their latest artist in residence.

Matthew Szösz will be working at the Glassworks until June 9 and was on hand today to show a packed-out house of Canberra school children just what he could do.

Born in Rhode Island, Matthew Szösz has received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Bachelor of Industrial Design, and a Master of Fine Arts (Glass) from Rhode Island School of Design. He has been working in art and art related fields in Rhode Island, New Mexico and California for the last 12 years.

Szösz won the 2009 Jutta Cuny-Franz Memorial Award, the second American ever to do so and was recently selected by the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution for its show “40 under 40” featuring the top 40 young crafts artists in America.

“Failure is a great teacher,” he says. “If you’re trying to take a process or a material toward the limit of your current ability, failure will quickly show you where those limits are.”

The Glassworks, whose CEO Ann Jakle is also an American, expects to collaborate with the US Embassy again in the future.

Matthew Szösz will be at the Glassworks’ 5th Birthday celebrations on May 26-27. He will give a free talk about his work on May 27 at 2.30pm.
