Valley ruins brought to life by artist

A NEW, ephemeral artwork by veteran Canberra textile artist Annie Trevillian will appear at the Valley Ruins heritage site on Saturday, April 28.

Funded by the ACT Heritage Unit as part of the 2012 Canberra and Region Heritage Festival “Innovation”, the artwork will interpret the Valley Ruins’ important history within the Canberra region.

Through a series of motifs inspired by research into the ruins, Annie Trevillian’s art draws on various aspects of the site – including artefacts, buildings and structures, orchard and plantings, food, animals and machinery – to examine the everyday existence of the men, women and children who lived there, including indigenous and European settlers.

The ephemeral work will appear in-place at the ruins, on Gungahlin Drive, beside the Burgmann Anglican School.

An important part of the new work, “Remnants: the layering of time, memory and place in a landscape encompassing family and community”, has been public engagement and community participation.

Trevillian has been working with students of Dickson College and Burgmann Anglican School and also facilitating a day-long print workshop at Megalo Print Studio and Gallery for the public during Heritage Week, where participants each printed their own valley ruins memento handkerchief.

“What Still Remains: Canberra’s ‘Valley Ruins” on Gungahlin Drive, beside Burgmann Anglican School, 8am – 4pm, April 28.
