Walter back from leave

Professor Walter
LATE yesterday, staff at the ANU School of Music received a letter from head of school Prof Adrian Walter via an email from the general manager’s office, saying that he was no longer on leave.

The letter read: “I want to let you know that I am not on leave so am available if any of you want to meet with me.”

Meantime the National Tertiary Education Union met with members in the Larry Sitsky Recital Room yesterday to discuss developments in the campaign as it moves into a more strategic phase.

Hong Kong’s daily the “South China Morning Post” reported today (May 16) that Professor Walter appeared in Hong Kong on Friday, May 11, to meet staff, students and alumni of the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.

The ANU had announced the day before that, May 10, “Professor Walter has been under a very considerable quantity of pressure and he took leave, with the full support of the university”.

According to the report, the academy is reviewing its role and structure to meet future development, but decided to hire Walter before the review ended.

William Leung Wing-cheung, chairman of the academy’s council, “admitted it was not fully aware of the controversy when the appointment was made”, but told the reporter, “since the decision was made under serious consideration based on Professor Walter’s personal merits, and we have done our reference checks, what is happening at ANU is not going to affect his appointment”.

The position attracted 17 candidates from around the world.
