2012: What we were – and weren’t – watching

WITH the ratings season drawing to a close, results of how local networks have fared this year are in.

Failed to draw an audience…The Shire
The year opened with “The Biggest Loser”, “My Kitchen Rules” and “The Big Bang Theory” in the top three spots, all drawing more than
50,000 viewers.

WIN won the first week with 22.3 per cent of the peak audience, followed by PRIME with 18.8 per cent, TEN with 16.2 per cent and the ABC with 13.9 per cent.

In the course of the year, WIN and PRIME have continued to jostle for top spot, bringing out the big guns in sport and reality programming.

The ABC had a resurgence, challenging the top two commercials and even winning the peak viewing time slot at one point in October.

TEN suffered this year, with programs like “The Shire”, “Everybody Dance Now” and “I Will Survive” failing to draw an audience.

Attracting top ratings for the year, the State of Origin matches even eclipsed the Olympic Games, at least on free-to-air.

“Masterchef” gave TEN a good run in the first half of the year while PRIME’s big winner was The AFL Grand Final.

Looking at the year as a whole, PRIME claimed the largest share, followed by WIN. The new digital channels are continuing to attract share, with 7TWO outranking SBS over the course of the year.
