ACT ahead in immunisation

THE ACT remains a national leader in childhood immunisation, according to a National Health Performance Authority report released today. Little baby get an injection

ACT Medicare Local Chair Dr Rashmi Sharma says the Health Communities: Immunisation rates for children in 2011-12 showed the ACT is above the national average in all three reportable age ranges.

“We have more one, two and five year olds fully immunised here in Canberra than the national average,” said Dr Sharma.

“The team of Canberra GPs, Practice Nurses, and Maternal and Child Health Nurses has worked hard to achieve this outstanding result for the ACT.  General practice provided almost half of all immunisations by families using their local practice as their ‘patient-centred medical home,” said Dr Sharma.

Dr Sharma says the results show Canberra parents are keen to protect their children from preventable childhood diseases through immunisation.

The high rates of immunisation in the ACT are a result of immunising across community health services, general practice and aboriginal community controlled settings.

ACTML is part of a nation-wide network of primary health care organisations supporting health professionals to improve the delivery of local primary health care services.
