Alice takes coffee pods to a fashionable high

SHE’S a keen coffee drinker, but local fashion designer Alice Sutton is taking her love of caffeine to a whole new level, creating a designer outfit using thousands of recycled Nespresso pods.

The CIT graduate and EDITION designer was invited by Nespresso to take part in the challenge, Project Upcycle, which asks one ambassador from each State in Australia to “recycle” at least 1000 pods in a creative way.

“There are all creative people from a sustainable field involved, so for example there’s an environmental artist, jewellery designer and two fashion designers including me,” says Alice.

“This challenge combines my three great loves really – fashion, coffee and sustainability.”

Alice’s creation is a pure wool jacket and dress, with 5000 caps inserted into the hems to create a “circular angle that bounces when you walk.”

“It’s still very wearable, and I’ll also be creating some accessories using the pods to go with it,” she says.

The garment and all other project entries will be displayed in Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art later this month, where they will be auctioned with proceeds to go to each entrant’s chosen charity. Alice’s choice is Keep Australia Beautiful.
