Arts in the City: Honour for star flautist

THE Canberra Symphony Orchestra is honouring brilliant flautist Virginia Taylor in its August concert, “From the New World”.

A former associate professor of flute at the ANU, she’s gone off to co-ordinate flute at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne, but will be performing the Australian première of Matthew Hindson’s flute concerto, “House Music”, at Llewellyn Hall on August 21 and 22. RESEARCHERS/curators, Erica Seccombe, Prof Tim Senden and Ben Forster examine tensions between science and popular culture in partnership with the ANU’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Research School of Physics and Engineering in “Science Fiction” at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Gorman House, until September 28, 11am to 5pm, Tuesday to Friday; 10am to 4pm Saturday.

 

CRAFT ACT will host its inaugural international artist-in-residence when British textile artist, Michael Brennand-Wood, will undertake his residency at Gudgenby Ready-Cut Cottage during September as part of an ongoing collaboration with National Parks and Catchments.

 

THE eighth “Possible Worlds” film festival is bringing four new feature films and one short film representing independent cinema from Canada and the US to the Arc Cinema, Acton, August 21-23. Included is “Lunarcy”, a portrait of eccentrics obsessed with the moon. Bookings to 6248 2000.

 

“ARTMissionheart” is a show of art, photography and craft at Ainslie Church of Christ Hall, August 23-25. A charity auction will be held at 7pm on Saturday, August 24. Hours are Friday 11am-8pm, Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 11am-5pm.
