Arts in the city: Pike invites a pig-in

THE stage adaptation of Orwell’s “Animal Farm” by Brisbane’s “shake & stir” is coming to Queanbeyan soon. The Q’s Stephen Pike just couldn’t help himself when he advised prospective ticket buyers: “It’s your turn to pig in.” At The Q, March 5-7, bookings to 6285 6290.

CANBERRA’S centenary is swinging into gear, with film at the forefront, but Queanbeyan is getting in first, with its 175th birthday festive screenings. Helped by the unbelievably busy National Film and Sound Archive, 14 films from 1925-1989 have been compiled showing aspects of “Struggletown’s” history. “Moving Memories”, at The Q, 2pm and 7.30pm, on Friday, March 1. DANCER Albert David, Mirramu Dance Company and artists from Arnhem Land, are staging “Morning Star”, the result of a fabulous two-year project with direction from Elizabeth Cameron Dalman, cultural consultancy from Morning Star story custodian Banula Marika and an original music score by Airi Ingram. ART Song Canberra’s inaugural concert for 2013, “Centenary in Song”, will include “Seven Zen Songs for Voice and Viola” by Larry Sitsky and Peter J. Casey’s “Beautiful,” written in memory of the 2003 bushfires, performed by the brilliant husband and wife duo mezzo Christina Wilson and pianist Alan Hicks. YASS artist Kim Nelson has just been selected as a finalist in Tasmania’s $40,000 Glover Prize for his entry “The Sentinels (Looking towards Evandale from the Great Western Tiers)”.

THE Australian Haydn Ensemble will be here with “The Age of Elegance,” works by Haydn, Michael Haydn, Pleyel, Boccherini and Mozart, as the first in its 2013 series. At St John’s Reid, 7.30pm, February 27. Tickets at the door or australianhaydn.com.au

ANCA and Canberra Contemporary Art Space have a joint show, “BLAZE 7”, running at 1 Rosevear Place, Dickson, noon-5pm, Wednesday to Sunday, until March 3, showing the “crème de la crème” of emerging visual artists – Julia Boyd, Trish Roan, Steph Wilson, Holly Granville-Edge, Roman Stachurski, Elly Freer, Ruby Green, Hannah Bath and Patrick Larmour. ANCA Gallery is also calling for exhibition proposals for the first half of 2014 – the deadline is before March 7. THE Australian Chamber Orchestra is diving into new territory in “The Reef”, where music by Bach, Rameau, Pete Seeger and Alice in Chains will be accompanied by Jon Frank’s projected images of the ocean, surfers, the desert and the night sky.
