News is to hand that within an hour of opening her first solo  show, “A Mirror On Memory,” on Tuesday at The Q in Queanbeyan, she’d sold 21 works, from a total of 33.  The exhibition was opened by Roy Forward, former staffer at the National NGA, who commented, “people cannot be helped but be moved by this exhibition.”

The  works on vellum (calf skin) and paper, in watercolour and graphite show the fleeting nature, the “impression”, of plants at different points in their life cycles.  The subject itself gives us its memories and its experiences in life.  The image mirrors what is there.

Field believes that much of life is made up of “mirrors” and “memories” saying, “most  people record the image of plants at the height of their beauty, in full bloom.  Within a short period of time, the absolute beauty of the plant fades and it becomes a shadow of its former self and is thrown out.  It becomes a memory.  These works show the  character and the scars of a life well lived, of a purpose achieved.  People are always drawn to look at a plant in full bloom.  Few people look at the spent bloom, the broken leaf, the decaying stick.”

Sharon Field, “A Mirror on Memory,” an exhibition of botanical art, until October 12 in The Q Exhibition Space, Queanbeyan, rear of 253 Crawford St, Queanbeyan, Monday to Friday,  10am-4pm and Saturday, 10 am-3pm.
