Canberra seniors ‘live life’

IT’S time to celebrate the older people in our lives, says Minister for Ageing Shane Rattenbury, as seniors week kicks off today.

The week was launched with a Chief Minister’s breakfast this morning hosted by Rattenbury and with special guest, internationally-renowned scientist Dr Jim Peacock.

Rattenbury says seniors week, with its theme “Live Life”, is a chance to honour the lifelong contribution of older Canberrans and the important roles they play in our families and communities.

“ACT Seniors Week is also a time to celebrate older people and provide them with opportunities to observe, participate in and experience the many activities, events and programs that are available in Canberra,” he says.

“[It] has been celebrated in the ACT for over 21 years and its broad aims are to promote positive attitudes and to increase awareness, inclusion and participation for older people within the ACT community.”

Mr Rattenbury says a great deal of policy and practical work had been undertaken in the ACT to support older Canberrans, including the country’s first Older Person’s Assembly and the ACT’s inaugural Grandparents Day.

“Looking ahead we have some more great events in development, including a film festival especially for seniors and the inaugural Australian Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Conference, which should create a range of new ideas on how we can continue to ensure this city is age friendly,” he says.

ACT Seniors Week runs until 24 March. For more information visit www.cotaact.org.au/2012/10/seniors-week-2013/
