Canberra’s ocean racing contender flies the ‘C100’

CANBERRA Ocean Racing Club’s yacht “Namadgi” will carry the Canberra Centenary logo on her mainsail as she battles the southern swells from Sydney to Hobart this Christmas.

Skipper Paul Jones, in his ninth Sydney to Hobart race, leads an eight-member crew: Peter Morris, Patrice de Caritat, Steven Ring, Marcus Morley, Michael Martin, Sam DeLorenzo and Peter Ottesen. Their ages range from 27 to 66, and their occupations include public servant, retired doctor, geologist, builder and IT contractor.

The 44-foot Elan Impression yacht is based at Pittwater in Sydney and owned by a syndicate within the Canberra Ocean Racing Club, which was founded in 1979.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said it would be great to see the “Canberra 100″ logo in an event that captures the attention of a lot of Australians every year.

“The Canberra Centenary logo has been beamed across the world – including on a banner when it visited our troops in the Middle East as well as on the International Space Station, on a flag carried by an astronaut – and now the centenary logo will be seen in one of the world’s most iconic ocean yacht races,” Ms Gallagher said.

“The Sydney to Hobart is an icon of Australia’s summer sport, and in the last days of Canberra’s centenary year, a global TV audience will see the Centenary logo on Namadgi’s sail and hull.”

“We are also aware that the Sydney to Hobart is one of the world’s most difficult yacht races, so we wish Namadgi and her crew fair weather and good sailing all the way to Hobart.

In the 2007 Sydney to Hobart, a different yacht with the same name, also owned by the Canberra Ocean Racing Club, won its division.
